As explained by Fibre2Fashion in the article “Effect of Stitches, SPI & Sewing Threads on Seam Strength & Slippage on Fabrics,” the construction of seams—often taken for granted—is central to the integrity, strength, and performance of sewn products.
A seam is commonly understood as the join between two pieces of fabric. However, industry standards like BS 3870 define a seam more broadly as the application of a series of stitches to one or multiple layers of material. This includes not only the actual joining of fabrics but also edge finishing, hems, and decorative sewing. In essence, virtually all sewing within a sewn product can be considered part of its seam construction.
