Seam Performance in Waterproof Gear: Ultrasonic Welding Insights

As reported by ResearchGate in their study “Research on the Seam Performance of Waterproof Clothing Based on Continuous Ultrasonic Welding Technology,” a new seam production technique called Ultrasonic Welding-Thermo Adhesive Tape Sealing (USW-TATS) has been developed to enhance waterproof performance in outdoor clothing. This method eliminates common issues like seam leakage caused by needle holes and thread, offering greater durability and dimensional stability.

The study compared three seam technologies—traditional sewing with tape sealing (S-TATS), ultrasonic welding (USW), and the improved USW-TATS method. The results showed that USW-TATS outperformed traditional sewing by offering higher tear strength, hydrostatic pressure resistance, and reduced shrinkage. Researchers also identified optimal welding parameters, including amplitude, roller pressure, and speed, to achieve the best seam performance.
