In the realm of filter media, fabrics play a crucial role and comprise the largest segment of the market. These fabrics are created from natural or synthetic fibers and filaments, offering a relatively soft and flexible nature that typically requires support for filtration purposes. The manufacturing process can involve the dry-laying of fibers or filaments to produce non-interlaced fabrics, commonly known as “non-woven” materials. Alternatively, when fibers or filaments are spun into continuous yarn, they can be woven or knitted into interlaced fabrics, as discussed in this chapter. Additionally, materials woven from single filaments of wire or plastic are often referred to as meshes.
