As reported by Fast Company in their article, “This Revolutionary Fabric Could Make Flying Economy Less Terrible,” a new smart textile developed for Airbus could transform the flying experience by significantly improving seat comfort in economy class. Click here to learn more about how this innovative fabric technology could ease your next flight.
Developed by the London-based design firm Layer, the concept features seats made with conductive thread that adapts to the passenger’s body. Electrical currents flow through the thread, altering the firmness of the seat based on the person’s weight, size, and movements. This allows for automated ergonomic adjustments, helping to alleviate discomfort during long flights.
Passengers can further personalize their experience through an app, adjusting the seat’s firmness, temperature, and even receiving suggestions on how to sit better. The app tracks sitting habits and offers recommendations, such as taking breaks or doing in-seat stretches to enhance comfort.
According to Benjamin Hubert, founder of Layer, this design aims to help passengers understand their discomfort and guide them toward solutions. By providing real-time feedback on seating posture and ergonomic suggestions, the smart textile could revolutionize the way passengers experience long flights.
